Checklist for cloud migration
In order to benefit from certain advantages – such as a massive cost reduction – during the migration to a cloud, a well thought-out migration strategy is crucial in advance.
In the context of a cloud migration some criteria have to be considered, which are listed below to help you to start or optimize your strategy in the best possible way:
- Identify unused programs
- Stakeholder identification and involvement
- Choosing the right cloud model
- Detailed project planning with contact persons and time schedule
1. Identify unused programs
At the beginning, it is important to identify unused programs and remove them if necessary. In addition, all programs should be checked for compatibility with a cloud. The removal of unused programs could have the positive side effect of further cost savings.
2. Identification and involvement of stakeholders
A further optimization, which should be carried out before the migration begins, is the identification and involvement of stakeholders. Stakeholders can have a strong influence on a successful migration and at best speed up the process considerably.
3. Choosing the right cloud model
The last task before the actual migration is to choose the right cloud. Which type of cloud is the most suitable for your own company and the problems associated with it? A distinction is made here between three major types of cloud: private cloud, public cloud, hybrid cloud. In the following article, the types mentioned will be discussed in more detail.
4. Detailed project planning
Now that all programs have been identified, unused ones sorted out, stakeholders involved and the right cloud selected, the detailed project planning now follows. The detailed project planning must be considered individually for each cloud migration. However, there are some criteria that are generally applicable to every migration. First of all, fixed contact persons should be defined during the project phase and beyond if necessary. Ideally, the migration should be organized and carried out with the help of a partner who will then take over further support. Keeping to the schedule is also an important factor for the success of a smooth migration. Milestones as well as an end date, by which the migration should be fully completed, must be recorded and controlled to ensure a smooth process.
